I was reminded today that SpinWeb is run like the Starship Enterprise. Using the example given by Randy Pausch in “The Last Lecture" Michael Reynolds is a lot like Captain Kirk. Kirk is not the best fighter, strategic planner, or engineer (but is quite the lady’s man – Just like Mike). Where Kirk shines as a true leader is his ability to delegate (trust in a major way) his team to be the best they can be.
Where Michael especially excels is his ability to hire and trust his team. Case in point, our newest hire Arrick Garringer. Arrick came on staff as a talented designer, lending his skills at branding & print design. Soon we realized that Arrick is also skilled at connecting – building meaningful relationships with our clients in a way that only he can. Now Arrick is the VP of Sales at SpinWeb.
I’ve overheard team members saying, "Arrick really got me thinking the other day…” followed by a specific example of how someone has decided to up their game based on Arrick’s example. How do you put a value on that?
This is really the key to small business afterall – Michael captains the ship by hiring great people – people who are better than the sum of the parts. Scotty would never captain the Enterprise – but it could not run without him.
All of this is possible because SpinWeb is structured as a ROWE (Result Only Work Environment). Titles, job descriptions, and office hours don’t make a company. Great people who focus on results do.
Hire great people. Give them a clear vision and the tools to succeed. That’s what Kirk did.
